It was both a relaxing and busy weekend.  On Friday night and Saturday morning, I was able to spend some quality time with WoW, which I hadn’t done in a week.  Thanks to some crappy Internet service (hello, Comcast), the experience proved somewhat challenging.  Seriously, it goes down about every hour.  What am I paying for again?  Talk has begun about switching.

After that, I started painting the living room.  I spent three hours and got approximately 2 walls done.  I will be continuing the process today.  When I’m done, I’ll give you the before and after shots.

Soccer began on Sunday.  Thanks to overlapping game times, Mr. Geeky and I split off and each attended a game.  Spring soccer is “less intense” than fall, but it also means that the players aren’t as good.  That’s a good thing generally, but both Geeky Girl and Geeky Boy are pretty good players.  I’m hoping they don’t get frustrated with it.

And, I’m not allowed to say too much about this, but let’s just say that girls have entered our lives and there has been much texting and driving around to various places around town.  FSM help me now.

My sporting weekend actually began on Thursday, when I had to bounce back and forth between two different fields watching Geeky Boy play soccer and Geeky Girl play field hockey. The soccer game was the last of the season so there were more parents than usual. I watched for a few minutes and then hit the field hockey game, where the PTO was selling baked goods and pretzels to raise money for new track uniforms. I was greeted enthusiastically by the other moms, quite a contrast to how I’d felt at the last field hockey game. I didn’t pay much attention to the actual game as there was a carnival-like atmosphere on the sidelines. I chatted with one mom about the web site, and a couple of others about the craft-costume-baked good fiasco. All of us, apparently, had been running around like crazy people until well into the night. I confessed to using a mix for the cornbread. The response was, Well of course you did. Who wouldn’t?

After the game was over, I gave Geeky Girl money to buy a preztel and some water and headed to the soccer game. Geeky Girl met me there and we cheered the team on. Geeky Boy scored in the last few minutes of the game, winning the game for the team. It was pretty exciting.

Saturday, it poured rain off and on and we thought for sure the game would be canceled. But it wasn’t, so I stood on the sidelines with the other moms under our umbrellas. We complained that the game should have been called. When I told the other moms that I was going out after the game, they told me I shouldn’t even be out there. I did leave early, sending Geeky Girl home with the coach. I have no idea the outcome of the game. It was called, in fact, not long after I left.

Sunday, Geeky Boy had his last game before the playoffs. He plays goalie for this team, which makes me nervous every time. I spent much of the game yelling that the ref wasn’t calling offsides or pushing and pushing the players to “go to the ball.” I was a bad soccer parent. They lost the game, but it was a good day to be outside.

It’s all almost over for this year, all this running around from game to game, keeping soccer socks and uniforms clean, and hauling lawn chairs in the trunk of the car. I won’t lie. I won’t miss it. But I’m very glad the kids do it every year and that they enjoy it. Geeky Boy is talking about doing winter soccer so that he has something to do before lacrosse season. And Geeky Girl is planning either lacrosse or soccer in the spring. I don’t have to push them to sign up. They ask me to sign them up. As long as that’s the case, I’ll keep doing it.

It was a pretty lazy weekend at the Geeky household, but we did manage a few activities.

First, soccer season started on Saturday. Because we signed up late, we had no idea who the coach was or what he looked like. When we arrived at the designated field (and there are 3 at this location), there was a lot of hubbub because there were ambulance and police. We quickly realized a kid on the adjacent field had been hurt. It was a bit disconcerting because she was lying face down on the ground. Turns out, she’d dislocated her shoulder, not terribly serious, but painful I’m sure. We finally found the team and the coach and then realized that Geeky Girl had forgotten her shin guards. Mr. Geeky zoomed back home to find them. Meanwhile, she had to sit out. Once she got to play, though, she was her usual speedy and well-rounded team player. She made a few excellent passes. The coach and the team were immediately impressed. Although she’s probably the smallest on the team, she’s also the oldest and has the longest amount of time playing.

After soccer, we made a trip to Home Depot for light bulbs and for plants to replace ones I’d allowed to die over the last cold snap. I replanted them and planted a couple of other plants, but held off on major gardening until Sunday morning. I weeded and generally cleaned things out, which took quite a while. Then I planted a rose bush. I have no idea how this will do, but it’s something I’ve wanted to try. I also got some summer bulbs, but was too exhausted to plant them after all the weeding. I’m going slowly on the garden.

And then there was the WoW playing. I was in a groove this weekend, so I spent a fair amount of time playing. An incident yesterday, however, is still sticking with me. If you’re not a gamer, you can skip this, but this is kind of about human behavior. So, over the weekend, I managed to run a couple of dungeons by grouping up with complete strangers. The first run, done fairly early in the morning, went really well, largely, I think because I’m pretty sure the whole group was made up of grown-ups. The second one went well until the end. The hard-to-kill dungeon bosses, of which there are 3-5 usually per dungeon, drop really good loot (weapons, armor, etc.) and the group generally rolls for them (this happens automatically). This loot is usually bound to you when you pick it up, so that you can’t give it away or sell it for a price at the auction house. There are two types of rolls, greed and need. Need trumps greed rolls and generally people ask before rolling need. So, for example, if 4 people roll greed, and 1 rolls need, even if the need roll is a 1, that person will win the item. People tend to pass on items they don’t need. I can’t use wands, for example, so I usually don’t roll on those. In this particular run, I’d passed on a few things and I’d rolled and won one thing. On on boss, a guy (who I decided was younger than 18 based on this and the incident I’m about to describe) asked if he could need roll on something, and we all hesitatingly said yes. On the final boss, a good piece of armor that I could use dropped and the same guy asked to need roll again, and I said no, you’ve already need rolled once and besides, there are two other people who could use that. I felt kind of bad about being jerky about the whole thing, but I still maintain a sense of fairness even in the game, and I felt the guy wasn’t being fair. He ended up calling me a loser and complaining that he really needed that item. I didn’t win it, and in fact, couldn’t have won it even before he’d asked for it because my roll was lower than the other guy’s. In retrospect, I wish I’d checked on that and just let him need roll for it. After all, it’s just a game. And part of my anger after he called me a loser was toward a guy I saw as taking the game too seriously. After all, when you’re not at the highest level, you tend to out level your items pretty quickly. And does anyone really *need* virtual items at all? But here I was, taking the game pretty seriously, at least the part about a game needing to be fair. So, I was kind of a hyppocrite and that didn’t make me feel too good.

What I also thought about this incident was the way the guy called me loser–in public for all to “hear”, and I wondered if he knew how old I was and that I’m a mom if he would have done that. I suspect he would have chalked it up to my being an old fogey and a girl to boot who didn’t know what she was doing and might have just shrugged and moved on. On the other hand, he might still have called me a loser to his friends privately. On still another hand, I must have been a good enough player for him to think that calling me a loser was okay. On the Internet, no one has to know you’re a mom.

Soccer lineupSoccer began this weekend. Last year, Geeky Girl essentially dropped out because they placed her in the wrong age group (too young) and she didn’t find it fun anymore. This year she’s in the right age group. Yes, she’s the smallest one in that picture to the left. But she is crazy fast and determined. She almost scored 3 times. I was pretty darn proud of her. When a lot of the other girls were slowing down and dragging, Geeky Girl was still zipping down the field. It was a really hot day. Very hard to keep your stamina on a day like that. Most importantly, I think she had fun, and it’s good to see her running around outside.

I’m trying to reinvigorate my exercise program, which for now involves mostly walking. I likeFinding our coordinates walking. I don’t need any special equipment (though I do own a pedometer) and I can mix it up by taking different paths. On the weekends, I’ve decided to have my workout involve geocaching. So, we went on our first geocaching trip on Sunday. We’ve been to this spot before, an estate just a few blocks over from our house. We *still* didn’t find the treasure. So, we’re going to move on to another location next weekend. We find our locations through this site. I think the kids were disappointed we didn’t find the cache, but we went for ice cream and water ice afterwards to make up for it.

In addition to getting outdoors more, I did some more work to become environmentally friendly. I purchased some recycling containers and some reusable grocery bags. Our recycling has been pretty hit or miss. I hate our system. Not only do we have to separate our recyclables, but we also have to put them out on separate days. It makes it really hard to keep up with. Also, they pick up clear glass but not colored glass. Colored glass has to be taken to the recycling center. We have way more dark/colored glass than clear. I found this site pretty useful in finding products and information about steps to becoming environmentally conscious.

So how was your weekend?
