On the history of computer interfaces:
I tell students all the time that “back in the day” (which makes me feel old), I had to type everything in just to open a file, just to connect to email. There was no double-clicking. And of course, today’s young kids are all about the touch screen. Not to mention cool stuff like the Kinect. On the one hand, it’s nice that interfaces are more intuitive. On the other, it means that what’s behind those interfaces is a mysterious black box. A box I ask my students to delve into. Most of the time, the reaction is–oh, cool!
