Today, I have a question for you. What are some jobs you’d do if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now? These are things that seem fun to you, that you do as an amateur but would never pursue professionally, etc. Here are mine:
- A wine maker, or similarly a sommelier.
- A chef. Pastry chef sounds fun, but I don’t think I have the design skills for it at all.
- Restaurant critic (see a theme?)
- Something that involves travel to exotic places, like a travel book writer or something.
What are your pie-in-the-sky careers?

I don’t actually do this for a hobby, exactly, but I’d love to be a park ranger or docent in some cool historical place.
Oh, yeah, I think that’d definitely be fun.
Secret Shopper for luxury hotels and spas — you get to test out room service, the mini bar and all the spa services — then swrite anonomous reviews of them.
Novelist. Midwife. Opinion columnist for the local paper. Owner and chef at my own little gluten free cafe.
And I love PhilosopherP’s idea of being a secret shopper. I’d totally love that job.
Private investigator
Librarian
TV producer (not writer–I don’t think I’d be a good scriptwriter)
Oh, I’d totally like to do computer forensic work, Wendy.
@PhilospherP – secret shopper of any kind sounds fun, but especially at the high end
@Kate, midwife, huh? Don’t know if I could handle that one.
I’d love to be a restaurant critic — if I could only do vegetarian reviews! (Oh, and I don’t want to have to eat mushrooms!)
Pastry chef! Also seamstress/fashion designer. Interior decorator.
